Earthquake resistance is one of the most critical safety requirements for buildings located in seismically active zones, and traditional heavy masonry walls are extremely dangerous during major seismic events. Their high mass and brittle nature means they can crack and collapse very suddenly during earthquake shaking, creating massive safety risks for building occupants. EPS Cement Sandwich Panel is designed with modern seismic engineering principles that make it one of the safest wall systems available for high earthquake risk regions.
The most fundamental seismic advantage of EPS Cement Sandwich Panel is its extremely low dead load. A 100mm thick panel weighs only 60kg per square meter, which is less than one third the weight of an equivalent thick clay brick wall. The total seismic force that a building experiences during an earthquake is directly proportional to the total mass of the structure, so using these lightweight panels immediately cuts the total seismic load the building frame has to resist by more than 60 percent. This drastically reduces the stress on the entire building structure during an earthquake, making it far less likely that the frame will suffer catastrophic structural failure.
The panel to panel connection system adds an extra layer of seismic safety. Every adjacent EPS Cement Sandwich Panel is connected to its neighbors using strong alkali resistant fiberglass mesh and cement mortar that creates a continuous flexible wall diaphragm that moves as a single unified unit during earthquake shaking. Unlike individual bricks that can come loose and fall outward during tremors, the entire wall system flexes together with the building frame without breaking apart. This design has been validated in full scale shake table testing that demonstrated a full scale building constructed with EPS Cement Sandwich Panel can survive magnitude 8 to 9 level seismic activity without suffering any wall collapse or dangerous falling debris.
